There categories are used to organise cookies by purpose, so users can easily allow or deny specific types of cookies based on their preferences. Out of the box Etiquetta has four industry-standard categories, which you can customise:
- Necessary: these are cookies required for your website or service to function correctly (e.g. cookies that keep users logged in). Users cannot refuse these cookies, and this category cannot be deleted.
- Analytics: cookies set by analytics services such as Google Analytics or PostHog, usually used to identify returning visitors. Etiquetta is cookieless, so our analytics will function correctly even if this category is removed. This category can be deleted.
- Marketing: used by marketing and advertising services to track users between their services and other websites. This category can be deleted.
- Preferences: used to store user settings and choices, including their choice of cookie preferences. This category can be deleted.
You can also add your own bespoke categories.
Categorising Cookies
You can manually assign the cookies set by each tag when you add or edit that tag in the Consent category dropdown.
